Texas family mourns loss of promising young man

Drunk and otherwise impaired drivers continue to cause tragedy across the country. In fact, on any day of the week, the world may stop for families of loved ones caught up in disaster simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. One Texas family recently suffered a tragic loss when an impaired driver crossed the path of their son.

Last summer, the family was headed to church one Sunday morning when they passed the scene of a devastating accident just as a crushed vehicle was being towed from the area. Later in church, the parents received the devastating news that the car they had seen on the back of the tow truck belonged to their 19-year-old son, who had died in the accident at about 6:30 that morning. The accident was apparently the result of an impaired driver.

The 20-year-old driver of the other vehicle allegedly confessed to police that he had partied the night before, including smoking marijuana. He appears to have fallen asleep as he drove, causing his car to veer into the opposite lane. His car collided head-on with the vehicle of the victim, who was on his way to work. Police charged the surviving driver with manslaughter, and recently, the man pleaded guilty and waived his right to appeal the conviction.

In this case, the man charged in the accident accepted responsibility for his actions, but to families of those injured or killed in drunk driving accidents, there may be nothing to balance the scales. In addition to the financial burden they may face for their loved one's medical and funeral expenses, they will undoubtedly never be able to fill the void left by such a tragic and untimely death. Texas families in similar situations may seek the advice of an attorney regarding pursing possible restitution in a civil court.
