Pedestrian and cyclist accident fatalities on the rise

Each year, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) releases figures on statistical trends of automobile accidents and the most recent numbers are far from encouraging, especially for pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists.

Not every area of the USDOT's figures showed increased fatalities, but traffic fatalities in general trended upward for 2016, in some cases demonstrating the highest fatality rates in decades. While many factors may play a part in the increase in fatalities, the message that car accidents are an increasingly prevalent danger for thousands of Americans is clear.

If you recently experienced an injury accident, don't hesitate to reach out to an experienced attorney who understands how to protect your rights and interests. Recovering from an injury accident is often a long and painful task, one that requires a great deal of attention and effort.

Many victims of car accidents miss out on important benefits or greater, more fair compensation because they attempt to handle these matters themselves while also recovering from their injuries. You deserve full, fair compensation for your injuries without compromising the time and effort you direct to your physical recovery.

Troubling trends in car accidents

The USDOT has yet to release the statistics on car accidents throughout the country in 2017, but the numbers for 2016 show several concerning increases. Of course, before focusing on these areas of concern, it is worth noting that not all of the figures indicated increases.

Both drowsy-driving fatalities and distraction-related fatalities decreased in 2016, although the causes of this decrease are not yet known.

Unfortunately, for the most part, that is where the good news ends. Numerous other fatality categories increased significantly, some by surprising margins. Motorcycle accident fatalities, up 5.1 percent, experienced the largest increase in a single year since 2008. Other areas experienced even more concerning statistical leaps.

Both pedestrian collisions and bicycle accidents experienced the highest number of fatalities in nearly 30 years. According to the USDOT's figures, these categories saw the greatest number of fatalities since 1990 and 1991, respectively.

Don't fight for fair treatment alone

If you or someone you love suffered a serious injury in a car accident recently, you deserve professional guidance to help you navigate the difficult process of fighting for justice. Do not wait to reach out to a personal injury attorney who understands how to protect your interests and build strong claims for fair, complete compensation for your losses.
