Texas accident leaves 1 dead, many questions

Perhaps no one knows better than a motorcyclist that road situations can change in the blink of an eye. Those who travel the Central Expressway in Texas understand that traffic conditions are tense, at best, and that any bit of debris left in the road can create a deadly hazard. One motorcyclist and his passenger recently came across a traffic hazard that resulted in tragedy.

A 25-year-old woman could potentially face criminally negligent homicide charges after her car ran out of gas on the Central Expressway just before 4:30 a.m. Instead of pulling over to the shoulder of the five-lane highway, she left her vehicle in the middle lane and went to the side of the road where she called friends to come and help her. It was not reported whether she left the car's hazard lights flashing, notified police or took any other measures to prevent an accident.

Moments later, the 34-year-old motorcyclist traveling in the center lane struck the back of the abandoned vehicle. He and his passenger were thrown from the bike, and the operator suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger was critically injured and was transported to a nearby hospital where doctors placed the victim in a medically induced coma.

Even if Texas prosecutors decide not to press criminal charges against the woman who abandoned her car, the families of the victims of this motorcycle accident may seek justice through the civil courts. It is likely they are dealing with mounting medical expenses as well as funeral costs. Often, loved ones can find financial relief in a successful personal injury or wrongful death claim.
