Woman enters guilty plea on drunk driving charges

A Texas college student has entered two guilty pleas after facing charges in connection with a fatal accident two years ago. The 22-year-old woman was allegedly driving under the influence when her car collided with another and killed a young man and an unborn child. The jury was ordered to return guilty verdicts for the drunk driving accusations after hearing the defendant's pleas in court.

The fatal wreck occurred in 2016 after the student allegedly spent the day tubing and drinking with friends. She then drove her car along Highway 21. At some point, her vehicle veered over into the opposing traffic lane and smashed into another vehicle that was carrying a 23-year-old man and his pregnant wife. The crash killed the father-to-be at the scene.

The wife was transported to a nearby medical facility where physicians attempted to save the unborn child through an induced delivery. Sadly, the effort was unsuccessful and the child died. The mother was then informed later that her husband had also perished in the wreck. Video footage from police cameras purportedly show the driver in a bathing suit attempting to pass field sobriety tests. The driver's blood alcohol level reportedly measured .199, which far exceeded the Texas threshold DUI level of .08.

The trial was not completed, though the judge instructed the jury to find the woman guilty of two counts of intoxicated manslaughter based upon her guilty pleas, for which she will later be sentenced. Drunk driving accidents often bring incalculable devastation to victims and their families. No criminal charges can ever restore the lives of lost loved ones nor can they alleviate the financial hardships that often accrue in the weeks and months following these tragedies. Accident victims, including the surviving families of deceased victims, typically have options for legal recourse by pursuing personal injury and/or wrongful death lawsuits in the civil justice system.
